David has been playing the viola and making music his whole life. He has attended every one of our cantata workshops for the past three years. He was suffering from some serious heart problems in 2010 not knowing whether he would be around much longer or not. And at a time when his illness had stripped most of his energy from him David came to yet another cantata workshop. When asked why he chose to do that when there were so many other things he could have done, he said, "Bach is good for me. I needed to do it. When I make music I feel free from the stresses and worries of being sick. Playing music brings my focus away from the day-to-day and into the thrill of making music with others. It's just not the same playing alone. I need Bach and I need to play Bach with others."

14-year-old Luke attended a Bach Society concert partly to fulfill a school assignment to hear live performances. Though he enjoyed music and playing violin, they weren't things which dominated his thinking. But that night, during the harpsichord solo in Bach's Brandenburg Concerto V, Luke sat up, his eyes focused squarely on the stage. He was captivated by hearing the harpsichord played in a way he'd never heard before. After the concert he said to me,"Boy, that one with the harpsichord was my favorite!" Something had clearly grabbed him. That experience sparked his burgeoning interest in classical music. He has since taken more ownership of his playing, and now he's downloading all sorts of classical music for his iPod. It's clear to us that listening to classical music performed live by talented artists is critical to nurturing young musicians.
