Vivaldi’s Four Nations
Reconstructed by Matthias Maute, U.S. Premiere

This set of Antonio Vivaldi’s concertos, assigned to France, Spain, England, and India, were lost except for Il Gran Mogul which highlights the exotic character of India under the reign of the Gran Mogul. Matthias Maute has reconstructed the pieces and will present them, along with additional works, in a chamber setting. The performance will include Concerto La Francia, Concerto L’Inhilterro Siciliano Arioso – Allegro La Tempesta de Mare, Concerto Il Gran Mogul Larghetto, and Concerto La Spagna Cadenza Le Nacchere – Allegro.

VIVALDI’S Four Nations

Matthias Maute, Recorder | Artistic Director

Two-time JUNO Award winning conductor, composer, recorder, and flute soloist Matthias Maute has achieved an international reputation. In 2016 he was named artistic director of the Bach Society of Minnesota and in 2019 of the professional choir Ensemble vocal Arts-Québec.

Margaret Humphrey, Violin | Concertmistress

Violinist Margaret Humphrey maintains a vibrant freelance schedule as soloist, chamber musician, and orchestra member, performing in ensembles in the US and Europe. Previously a 25 year core member of the Minnesota Opera Orchestra, she now performs regularly with the Lyra Baroque Orchestra, Consortium Carissimi, Tempesta di Mare, and as concertmaster of the Bach Society of MN.

Conor O’Brien, Violin

Since moving to Minnesota from his native Ireland, Conor O’Brien has built an eclectic professional portfolio that covers almost every facet of the music business. As a violinist, he has performed with the Minnesota Orchestra and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and has performed on three continents, including a tour of South Korea with the World Symphony Orchestra

Ginna Watson, Viola

Ginna Watson is a string player based in the Twin Cities. She performs on bowed and plucked instruments including violin, fiddle, harp, middle Eastern rebec, and medieval vielle with a number of ensembles, including the Lyra Baroque Orchestra, Rose Ensemble, Bach Society, and the Montana Early Music festival.

Rebecca Humphrey, Cello

Cellist Rebecca Humphrey lives and works in the Philadelphia area where she is an active freelancer and member of several chamber ensembles including Kleine Kammermusik, Night Music, aMuse, Franklin Quartet, and Galline.

Josh Schwalbach, Bass

Josh Schwalbach is an active freelance musician and teacher in the Twin Cities and Upper Midwest region. As an Early Music enthusiast, Josh is a member of the Lyra Baroque Orchestra. He has performed on viola da gamba with Transept, the Aulos Ensemble, Cerulean Fire, and at the Twin Cities and Boston Early Music Festivals.

Paul Boehnke, Harpsichord

Paul Boehnke fell in love with recordings of the fugues of J.S. Bach when he was 14. The next year he began study in organ and was introduced to the music of Louis and François Couperin, Buxtehude, and Byrd. After studying in Amsterdam, Paul returned to the States and enjoyed a varied career performing and teaching, including nine years as the artistic director of the Bach Society of Minnesota.
